Functional Nutrition

Our mental health and well-being is complex and requires addressing many parts to the puzzle. The gut is often referred to “the second brain”. We also refer “rest and digest” when our brain and body is in a state of calm, which means people who are not in a state of calm (trauma or a chronic state of anxiety) often have digestive issues. Did you know 70-90% of serotonin in produced in the gut? Or that the Vagus nerve is responsible for “rest and digest”? The gut and the brain simply go together.

Could Functional Nutrition be Beneficial to You or your Child?

There are many signs that function nutrition could be helpful–some signs you might not even consider. Yes, gas and bloating, the regularity of your digestions are all indicators that somethings going on, but so is chronic fatigue, brain fog, not being able to lose weight, children who struggle with behaviors and attention, and hair loss (or maybe extra hair that you really don’t want). Are you convinced exercise doesn’t actually work? Do you feel completely drained after a workout, but you keep doing it because that’s the way to lose weight? Do you feel unable to manage your anxiety when you’ve always been able to? Have you been on antibiotics many times or for an extended length of time? Do you have acne? Are you sleeping poorly? It all matters, and no, it’s not normal.

Food, and our relationship with food, is an emotional thing. You might feels yourself feeling on edge or even triggered by the thought of changing your diet. That’s normal. The foods we eat release neurochemicals in our brain that help us feel better (comfort foods), but the problem is that it creates a cycle that in fact keeps you feeling unwell in the long run. You are not alone in your journey to wellness. You will have the support you need all along the way.

“The reason I added functional nutrition to the practice is because of the impact it had on my own life. I had no energy, I no longer liked exercise because it was too exhausting, I noticed I couldn’t build muscle or lose weight, and I was so tired all the time, I didn’t want to do anything.

I also assess for digestive issues when doing intakes with my clients because it gives me clues about how their brain is operating. If I truly want my clients to find wellness, then we need to talk about nutrition.”
