Its a Hard Knock Life

There are moments in our lives that make us or break us. It’s part of the ups and downs of life. Our hearts can be broken into a million pieces. Our lives can be shattered. In those moments- we may feel down for the count. We feel like we’re free falling into the abyss. We tried and we got hurt.

At the end of the day, we can fall and break as many times as possible AND it’s how we get back up that’s important. It’s who we choose to be as we pick up the pieces. It’s the character and values we choose to keep and exhibit in the midst of CHAOS. And it’s that new person who continues on the journey – leaving our old selves behind. We each have a past. We have gone through defining moments- both positive and difficult. 2-3-4 years ago, is the person standing in front of your mirror today the person you wanted to be?

I don’t know about you, but I have absolutely gone through seasons I didn’t think I would make it out of. I may have mentioned this analogy before, but I felt like I was treading water, just BARELY keeping my head afloat. And I was exhausted. In that moment, if someone even tried to tell me “it will get better” “ you’ll get past this”, I absolutely dismissed them. I remember thinking, maybe I would get past this season, yet in that moment- I could only imagine getting past that day. Thinking- if the world could stop for just one moment, I would be okay. But the world didn’t stop. I had to learn to be okay in the chaos. And wouldn’t you know it, I made it past that season. And I was able to build character and perseverance in the midst of my broken world. I learned a lot about myself through that season. A lot about myself that I wanted to keep, and a lot that I wanted to continue to work on.

Have you ever felt this way? That when the world knocks you down, it REALLY knocks you down? You think you need something, but you never get it? Or you get it, and it’s in fact not what you needed all along? That’s part of life. Life is tough. It gives us scars and callouses. And it also gives us our story and our character.

What I have learned from my many difficult seasons is that, we can re-frame our world ending, into the thoughts, “I am in a character building season.” “ right now, “I can only focus on today- because that’s literally all I have the capacity for- but how have I grown today?”.

We may not all be in a character building season today, but if we prepare our thoughts – we can get through it when it comes. Sometimes we need extra support to rebuild and regrow, through our character building season. Just because you’re building character, doesn’t mean you have to walk the journey alone. This is the most important season to reach out for help- whether it be family, friends, or a professional.

It’s definitely a hard knock life, but- even in quarantine- you don’t have to go through this life alone. In adversity, we are able to see what we can learn. It just takes going through it to see it. So if you feel feel like you’re drowning. Or if it feels like the walls are closing in. Or if it feels like the world has stopped and you can’t stop moving. Or if you feel like the world is zooming past and you can’t keep up. Or if it feels like you’re free falling with no end in sight. Whatever it is this may feel like for you- know that you’re not alone. Find your people. And if that’s not enough- give us a a call- we’ll be your people to help work through this season.
